Clone Wars Premier Party

The Host, Ryan Bradley

We were so lucky to be chosen by HouseParty.com to host a Star Wars Clone Wars Season 3 Premier party last Friday. Ryan would hardly wait for the end of the week and even Emerson got in on the excitement. The kit arrived about a week before the party and we were able to spend a little time going over everything and lining up our party.

We had 4 great friends join us for the premier party. We began the party with several activity sheets followed by a light saber fight in the living room.

I served Ewok Stew (Chicken Tortilla Soup) to all of the boys covered in yummy cheddar cheese and served with crispy tortilla strips.

All of the boys were so excited that they ate quickly and promptly went out to play while the table was cleared and the Galactic Battle Game.

All of the boys enjoyed playing the new game and were excited about the bracket competition. At the end of the competition, the boys were able to choose 2 action figures to take home at the end of the evening.

The boys settled into the theater room and enjoyed Yoda Sodas and fresh popped popcorn. They loved the season premier and were so excited about watching the next episode. The behind the scenes DVD and preview were also a big hit.

Today is Earth Day 2010. Earth Day always makes me think back to Ms. Walker in Biology II. I was so excited that I chose her name for Teacher Appreciation week. At the end of the week she gave me a gift as a thank you for everything that week and it was my first Earth Day t-shirt. I absolutely loved it and wore it until it literally fell apart. Ms. Walker had such a positive impact on my life and the two memories really bring joy to my heart.

Fast forward way more years than I care to admit to Earth Day 2010. We have been blessed with an amazing spring and everything around us is blooming and alive. At work today, I was walking back across campus Rendi and Lynette and we were talking about how beautiful everything is right now. Both ladies told me how much they love taking pictures when everything is so green and how much it impacts pictures.

I couldn't wait to get dinner out of the way tonight so that I could try my hand at green photos. Let me know what you think.

Here are my favorite photos from today. Easter is such an amazing today. Today the world stops to rejoice in Jesus conquering the grave. Today we take time out of our crazy daily lives to stop and spend time in reflection of all that Jesus did for us.

Emerson was the first to find the Easter baskets this morning and was so sweet to get her brother before tearing into her basket.

Emerson's class had their Easter egg hunt Thursday morning, but unfortunately, we missed it. The hunt had been rescheduled each day this week at 9:30. So, crazy me, I took her at 9:10 on Thursday morning. I was sad that we missed the egg hung, but Emerson took it all in stride. We helped walk all of the kids from her class and the other young 2 class back to their room. Her amazing teacher even had yummy iced sugar cookies waiting at the room.

I was totally surprised with Joey & Isha Jones along with their brand new daughter Siah came out to watch Ryan's 2nd soccer game. We couldn't have asked for better friends. Both the kids were super excited and it was adorable to watch Emerson literally run across the field to get to Joey.

Ryan's team had a great game and are now 2-0.

Well, my blog is officially hopelessly behind. I have logged in many, many times only to be reminded how terribly far behind I am.

But I put the past behind me. Maybe one day I will make the time to go back and catch up, but for now we are pressing forward.

Here are a few pictures that Brad took of the kids playing in the living room. Ryan has been playing guns since he was 6 months old. He actually made play guns out of legos, sticks, toys, pens, you name it for all these years. His little sister just loves to be able to play with him and is happy to pick up a nerf gun and head out to "war."

Monkey See, Monkey Do

Emerson loves monkeys! We have been lucky that Gymboree has put out two lines of monkey outfits this year. She asks specifically for her monkey clothes. She really is a little monkey. She is so silly and makes us laugh all the time. Emerson loves to sing. She is getting more and more stubborn, but usually will do what she is a told and says, "Sorry, mama." It melts my heart.

I can't believe that next month she will be two. God has filled my heart with so much love and joy these last two years. Emerson was just the recipe to heal my broken heart. Who doesn't love a beautiful little girl that RUNS to greet you with the biggest smile? She will hold her arms straight up and say, "hug!" She loves to have tea time at Grammy's, a gun shoot out at Grandma and Grandpa's house, and "build" legos with her brother at home.

Her teachers at daycare love to tell me about her adventures. Last week in the atrium a couple of the kids were banging on the closet doors (which they are not supposed to do). Before the teacher could go over and get on to them, Emerson walked over, pointed at them, and told them to stop, now. Ms. Arveda told me that she doesn't need to be around, just put Emerson in charge.

They are preparing for a Christmas program next Thursday and will be singing 3 songs--Jingle Bells, Jesus Loves Me, and Happy Birthday. Emerson is the only one that knows the songs, but I am unsure that she will sing them in front of a crowd. I think it is a lot to ask from a 2-year old class.

I had a great time taking the kids to Breakfast with Santa. I have always wanted to go and this year I don't work on weekends! I love having a normal job after so many years of living at the office all fall. The event started with the chef from Abilene Regional instructing the kids on how to make an elf out of a crepe. Ryan loved his and made two and ate them as quickly as could be. Emerson liked putting hers together, but only wanted to eat the fruit.

A magician from Fort Worth put on a very entertaining show and Ryan enjoyed going up to watch. Emerson stayed at the table with me and colored.

The guest of honor finally arrived at the end of the event. All of the kids in the room came running to see Santa. Emerson waved hi, but she had no interest in meeting the man in red.

Silly Songs with Emerson

Emerson is talking more and more and singing all the time. She randomly breaks into her A,B,C's, Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, I sing you a Song, and Jingle Bells at any given moment. It just melts my heart! I got a short video of her singing as we were leaving day care and I helped a little. Stay tuned until the end of the video to hear Emerson send her love.

Fall Festival

Friday night we attended the Ortiz Fall Festival. This is the first year that I have not volunteered to work at a booth, but I didn't think that Emerson would want to stand in one spot for an hour or two. Good thing I didn't volunteer. I don't think we stood in one spot for more than a minute. Emerson dressed as a kitty as a tribute to her cousin Miriam.

Ryan was happy to see the Jesse and Anthony as soon as we arrived. Jesse was a football player and Anthony was a robot. He and his dad made this amazing robot costume complete with lights. Tony, the boy's dad, came as Igor from Ghostbusters. I think you can tell exactly why Anthony won first place for 4th and 5th grade.

To top off our very busy Saturday, we went to the Conder house for Kallan's 8th birthday. The kids had a great time playing and McKenna and Emerson spent the entire evening together. McKenna is Kallan's cousin and she is a doll. Emerson loved being the center of things and didn't seem to notice how little she was with all of the big kids. Mendy had several activities planned and Cody grilled out awesome hamburgers and yummy hot dogs.

Homecoming Parade

Saturday morning kicked off with a grand parade down N 16th and Campus Court. We found a great place across from the library and my mom was able to meet us. I have struggled with Abilene parades the last few years because they have turned into nothing but a new car show. ACU's Homecoming Parade was anything but a car show. This parade was awesome! It had the Big Purple Band, cheerleaders, athletes, Homecoming Court and Coming Home Court, and Social Groups galore. I was in awe at the costumes, singing, and dance routines that paraded in front of us. By far, this is the best Abilene parade I have been to in many, many years. It was fun to get all dressed up in our ACU best. I bought Emerson this cheerleading outfit my first week working at ACU and she did NOT like it--not one bit. It took a lot of coaxing to even get it on her that morning, but once it was on, she loved it. She was such a big hit everywhere we went.

Homecoming Chapel followed the parade and we had designated seats on the floor. Dr. Money presented the big check showing how much money the Class Reunions (4s & 9s) had given to the University since their last reunion. It was great to see! It was neat to be involved with all of the activities and I can't wait for next year.

ACU Homecoming 2009 Carnival

Our first ACU Homecoming was the weekend of October 16th. Friday afternoon I was able to attend Chapel and it was wonderful. That evening Brad met me with Ryan and I picked up Emerson for the Homecoming Carnival. It was a blast! It was not too crowded and the kids loved everything there.

We also attended the Chemistry Circus and it was terrific. Both kids enjoyed all of the experiments. Emerson sat for an entire hour and only cried once (the students walked in with fire extinguishers and they were noisy).

All four of us were completely exhausted when we finally left campus, and we can't wait until next year.

We're Going to the Zoo, Zoo, Zoo! How about You, You, You?

Most of my favorite childhood memories involve my Grandma. My Grandma Belcher is the greatest! She had this really cool Lincoln Continental car with all the cool extras that we enjoy now like automatic windows and locks. My sister Amy and I thought it was very cool through Grandma made us wear our seat belts every time we got in the car. Oh, how times have changed!

Grandma always sang the "Going to the Zoo" song and she and I have been known to break into song at the mere mention of the Zoo. I sing the "We're going to the Zoo" song every time I go there. I love being able to share my favorite memories with my children. I love to reminisce about how simple life was then. I was always in such a hurry to grow-up when I was younger and I often think that I didn't truly slow down and just enjoy being a kid. I work hard now to bring out my inner child. I am definitely a big kid at heart. The Abilene Zoo has undergone major renovations these last few years and they are all fantastic. The zoo entrance has been moved and major attractions have been added. The newest feature that we got to see Saturday was the new crocodile enclosure and the flamingos also have a new spiffy home. The crocodile has been at the zoo as long as I can remember and he always lived in this TINY enclosure which didn't seem to bother him because I NEVER saw him move.

There is an amazing sculpture at Abilene Christian University called Jacob's Dream. It is so beautiful and was commissioned as a thank you to some tremendous donors of the University. Saturday, September 19th, I took the kid's picture there. It was a nice, cool morning and the beauty of the sculpture and landscaping took my breath away. It wasn't until I started working at ACU that I got to find out more about the sculpture. There was a group about to meet for a devotional so we didn't stay long. I snapped photos as quickly as I could.

There is an amazing duck pond on the Hardin-Simmons University campus that I have always enjoyed. I remember us going when I was little and was excited to pass this Abilene landmark to my kids. I took the week off from work to clean house and relax. This day I picked Ryan up after school and we all headed to HSU.

Miriam was so nice to pass down her table and chair set. It stays at Grammy's house and Emerson loves to sit at the table every time she is there. Grammy purchased a fun tea set (that makes noise) for Emerson to receive at Christmas, but little Emerson found it and had to have it early. Grammy didn't want to disappoint, so the two of them sit down for tea several times a week. These pictures are extra special because Emerson has a guest for tea, her cousin Cameron. The two girls were so precious together. I know that they will be best of friends.

Both Kyle & James had their birthday celebration at Mr. Gatti's. Ryan had been anxiously awaiting their birthday party for days on end. He could hardly wait to see Kyle--plus the added bonus of an evening at Mr. Gatti's. I always enjoy any family celebration with the Kahl family. Carly's mom is one of my favorite people and I just love getting to sit and visit with her. Carly had a million things going on during the party that I barely got a chance to visit with her. A major plus was her best friend was growing up, Courtney, who I had a great time hanging out with. I hadn't seen her in a long time and couldn't believe how grown-up her boys were. Time really goes by too quickly. Here are some of my favorite pictures from the evening.

Both Ryan and Emerson had a lot of fun. I couldn't believe that Emerson was so happy the entire evening. She loved watching her brother play video games and ride the mini-roller coaster. She rode the little train 6 times in a row (thankfully no one else was interested in riding).

Playing Catch Up Part 1

Too many things were on the horizon professionally that I took a little break from blogging for the last month or so. Brad is working at the hospital tonight so I thought this would be a great chance to catch up.

When we last looked back at the Hubbard family, Emerson had just turned 20 months. We were so excited when the Kilpatricks came to visit for Labor Day weekend. We spent Saturday morning at my mom's house and all enjoyed watching the kids play. Emerson loved getting to play with her Uncle Bo while Cameron loved hanging out with her great-grandma Belcher. Ryan enjoying spending time in the movie room playing Wii.

20 Month Super Baby

This week has been crazy at our house. Brad had to leave for Illinois yesterday afternoon to be with his mother. I wish that we had all been able to go, but Brad didn't want Ryan to miss out on school since this was his first week. Becky had surgery today and we are anxiously awaiting word on improvement.

Today Emerson is 20 months old. I am amazed at what a brilliant, sweet, fearless little girl she is. She is learning words by the handful everyday. She is very inquisitive and asks me, "What's that?" to everything she doesn't know. She has started signing dog and cat. Almost a month ago, we started going through the "Your Baby Can Read" program. Emerson doesn't like TV so we are only doing the sight words and flip book. She loves both and asks to read them MANY times everyday. Monday night we were sitting together in her room and going through the flip book. I pointed to the word nose and she pointed to her nose and said nose. I screamed and scared the tar out of Brad at the other end of the house. I couldn't be more proud! I love watching her learn.

She wore a really cute outfit tonight and I was lucky enough to get some really cute pictures of her when we arrived at my grandma's house for family dinner. After a really yummy dinner (with homemade pumpkin pie, none the less) the two kids played and danced in the living room.

First Day of School 2009

I can't believe that another school year is here. Summer goes by way too quickly and I am always a little sad when school kicks off again. I am incredibly spoiled in the summer and get to spend a lot of extra time with Ryan and my mom. Once the school year begins, they are so busy with school and we don't get to see each other as much as I would like. The beginning of the school year also means that it is the beginning of the busy season at my office. I really enjoying being busy, but don't enjoy having to go to work early in the morning.

We got off to a good start this morning. I told Ryan last night that back to school pictures were in the front yard at 7:00 sharp. We took a few pictures and pulled out of the driveway by 7:10. It really helped that Ryan loaded most everything we needed for today last night before it was dark. I made these adorable personalized animal print notepads for 5 of the teachers at Ryan's school and was anxious to get them delivered this morning. I went a little overboard and I don't think they will need notepads for a LONG time. I was feeling very creative and decorated gift bags with animals from the Animal Kingdom Cricut cartridge (sorry, no pictures).

We pulled into school this morning and Ryan immediately started looking for his friends. He really doesn't get to see anyone from school during the summer since we live out of town. I barely got him to stop long enough for a couple of pictures

Ryan is very excited about his teacher this year. She is a great teacher and wonderful friend to my mom. I feel so blessed to know that he is in such capable hands (and I know she won't let him get away with anything). I took a couple of quick pictures and left Ryan to get settled.

Emerson and I couldn't leave school without finding my mom. She has early morning duty all this week and was helping move people as quickly as possible through the line at the cafeteria. I was amazed how many people showed up for breakfast AFTER the bell rang for class. Emerson was so excited to see Grammy. We got to have a wonderful homemade cinnamon roll and hugs before we headed out.

Friday Night Fun

This evening was wild and crazy with the Hubbard gang. Ryan had his last football practice of the week. Brad got Ryan all geared up and took him out to practice tackling. Ryan played flag football the last two years with Upward, but nothing has prepared him for the world of tackle football.

It definitely took him some getting used to. He took a couple of really hard hits and was taken down hard at the beginning of practice. Brad and the coaches worked on encouraging him to press on and fight back. I got to the field about a hour and a half into practice and Ryan was discouraged. I could see the look on his face emanating defeat. I gave him a small hug and told him to do his best. The two boys would lay down on their backs and the coach would blow the whistle. The two boys were told to tackle each other until one boy was down or the coach blew the whistle again.

I won't lie, it was hard for me to watch. We now raise boys in a society where they are told that they can't fight, they can't wrestle, they can't be tough boys. Then we throw them on the football field and let them go crazy.

The first two boys that I saw Ryan go up against took him down easily.

Then Brad told him to ask the coach if he could go up again a boy named Brennan Mason. This boy really impressed Brad. Brad and Brennan's dad had been talking on the sidelines during each practice and Brennan had played with the team last year. I could tell that Ryan was scared. The first time the coach blew the whistle Ryan just froze. The coach went over and encouraged him and the next time Ryan jumped up and Brennan took him down quickly.

The third time the coach told Ryan to keep going and not stop. Ryan gave it everything he had and hit Brennan hard. It actually made me jump when the two boys hit the ground. I didn't get a picture and am kicking myself for it. The coaches went up to Ryan immediately to make sure that he was ok. Brennan walked over to Ryan and shook his hand and told him that Ryan had made his head hurt. I went to check on Ryan and he had tears in his eyes. I asked him if he was scared and he told me no, he was happy.

Brad came over and smacked him on his shoulder pads and gave him a big pep talk. It was really moving to see.

I left the boys at practice and went around the elementary school to my cousin, Brittney's new classroom. She will start teaching 3rd grade in one week. She only has a few days to get EVERYTHING done in her classroom. Her classroom is really large and really old. Brittney is so creative and has so many things in the works to spruce up the room. I helped hang red paper for bulletin boards along two walls. I can't wait to go back and help again tomorrow.

Thursday Evening Fun

Today is Miriam's 8th birthday and I miss her terribly! I wish that she were here so that I could give her a huge hug and take her shopping. Miriam and I always have the most fun together and December cannot come quickly enough for me. She started at her new school in Costa Rica last week and I am hoping that Mina will send pictures soon.

Brad took Ryan to football practice tonight. It was the first night that Ryan got to wear his helmet and pads. He had a great time and didn't get home until 8:40 tonight. He was absolutely exhausted and can't wait to do it again tomorrow.

Emerson and I enjoyed a pretty quiet evening around here. We spent some time in the yard watering the plants and shrubs. Emerson enjoyed playing on her little fort and was super photogenic for me. She also decided to help me water and ended up soaked. It was so cute and funny. I am so thankful that I changed her shoes and put her favorite Dora Crocs on before heading outside.

Ryan is excited that Kyle Kahl got to come and spend two nights with us this past weekend. Kyle was actually born the day that we found out we were pregnant with Ryan. What a small world! Kyle lives way out in the country the other side of Abilene from us, so our families don't get to see each other near as often as we would all like.

We picked Kyle up and headed to Chuck E Cheese. The two boys were so excited to be turned loose with almost 200 tokens. Emerson actually enjoyed herself and played for almost two hours. This is the first trip that she has sat on the rides and smiled. She even rode the carousel. I wish that I had been able to snap a few more pictures, but all I had was my iphone. The boys were very kind to share quite a few of the tickets that they earned with smaller kids (just like Ryan received countless times from strangers).

Sunday evening my mom and I took the 3 kids to the Abilene Swim Club for a few hours. Ryan and Kyle swam like pros and my mom and I hung out in the shallow end with Emerson. Emerson didn't fuss too much about wearing her floaties and enjoyed being in the "baby section." I packed a nice picnic of "pool sandwiches" (turkey and cheese with mustard), Doritos and Chips Ahoy and we washed it down with Capri Sun. Ryan loves having pool sandwiches and eats as quickly as he can so he can get back in the water.

Wednesday Night Dinner (A Mini-Family Reunion)

We had our weekly Wednesday night dinner at the Belcher house. We had a very impressive turn-out. This week's menu included my grandma's homemade macaroni & cheese, cucumbler salad, regular salad, and banana pudding for dessert.

Not only did Brad start his new job, but Ryan had his first football practice that evening. He was so excited and couldn't wait to meet his teammates. I left my camera at the office the first night of practice, but no worries, he practices 4 nights a week so there was plenty of time to take pictures the second night. I am so thankful that Brad is able to go to the practices. They have been lasting 2 hours and right now the temperature is hovering around 100 degrees. Emerson and I have been coming home each evening and are happy to let the boys have some time together. Here are some pictures of Ryan's second day of practice.

August 3rd, Brad's New Job

Monday, August 3rd, Brad traded in his scrubs for shorts and tennis shoes and a great new job at the Abilene State School. He will be working 8-5 as a nurse supervisor at their campus. He is so excited to be working a normal shift and we are too! Brad thought I was completely silly when I had to take his picture before he left for work that morning. I told him to think of it like the first day of school.

Sometimes I feel like we wake up and walk out the door only to return to call it a night. Today we were able to spend a lot of time at home and I spent the afternoon cooking. I thought that I would share a great, easy recipe that I made for lunch. You can tell from the pictures that Emerson gives it her seal of approval! I also roasted chicken and red potatoes for dinner, but no pictures.

Creamy Penne Rigate

Ingredients:
1 pound ground turkey or lean ground beef
1 box of penne rigate (or your favorite tubular shaped pasta, we use Dreamfields)
1 onion chopped
1 tablespoon olive oil
3 cloves garlic
fresh basil and fresh parley (or whatever you have around)
1 block reduced fat cream cheese cubed
1 jar of your favorite sauce (we use Newman's Own Sockarooni)
1 cup grated mozarella cheese

Directions:
1) Bring large pot to boil and add pasta when water is boiling. Cook to your desired tenderness (I like the pasta to still be a little bit firm) and drain.
2) Heat olive oil in pan over medium heat for a minute or two until pan is hot
3) Add onion and saute for 3-5 minutes until onions are translucent and add garlic for the last minute or so
4) Add ground turkey or ground beef and cook completely
5) Drain off any excess grease (there shouldn't be much since the meat is so lean)
6) Add entire jar of sauce over low heat. Next, add cream cheese cubes until incoorporated into sauce.
7) Pour sauce mixture over prepared pasta
8) Add mozarella cheese over individual servings

This is a super easy dish to prepare and won't break the budget. Enjoy!

Weekend Adventures, August 1st

Having two extra little boys at the house Saturday was a lot of fun. Brad was so kind and brought home McDonald's for everybody so I didn't have to cook breakfast. The boys had a great time eating together.

I didn't get any pictures of Ryan's room and wish that I had. I am amazed at what a mess can be made in just a few minutes. I have definitely relaxed a lot over the years. When Ryan was little and had friends over, I would cringe at the thought of the hours it would take me to reorganize every toy in the right bin. Now, I just want the toys to stay in the room and not seep out in the hall. Several times, I had the boys take 5 minutes and pick up what they could before they started playing again.

Kallan, Kason, and Ryan were all so good about including Emerson as much as possible. She loved going into Ryan's room and playing Thomas the train, Legos, and Transformers.

I took the boys to meet their mom late afternoon and Ryan was so sad to see them go. We already made a playdate for Ryan to go to their house Tuesday.

Ryan, Emerson, and I made a quick trip through the mall. Dillards was having a great sale and Brad really needed some new shirts for his new job he starts on Monday. We made out like bandits. I was able to get him 7 button-up shirts for less than a $100. I was thrilled! Brad has been wearing scrubs for the last 15 months and now gets to wear "normal" clothes. He couldn't believe how many "table cloth" shirts I bought for him. I even showed him the receipt which I never would have done if I had been able to look at shoes for me. I tried to take a little time to look at the Women's Dillards for me, but Emerson decided that she needed to be carried everywhere. We walked (Emerson was carried) back through the mall and made a pit stop at Coastal Cookies for a cookie and drink for each of us. Everyone felt much better and we called it a day.

Friday, July 31st

I called Mendy today to see how her week was and she invited me, Ryan, and Emerson over for hamburgers. I was so excited because we don't get to see each other often enough! We got to their house about 6:30 and Ryan immediately made himself at home with Kallan and Kason.

Cody cooked out great hamburgers with Heinz 57 sauce basted on. Everyone enjoyed the hamburgers and wide variety of chips. Emerson loved getting to sit at the table with the big boys.

After dinner we went out in the garden and Mendy and I hunted for crops ready to pick while Cody carried Emerson around the yard. We have been blessed with a lot of rain and all of the ground is really soft and muddy.

The boys spent the entire evening playing Wii, Legos, and gun fights. They were all 3 really kind and careful when Emerson wanted to come in their room to play. I wish that I had gotten their picture, but they were too busy.

Emerson fell in love with Mendy's little pink vacuum cleaner. I was so thankful to get a little video of her before the Flip Video croaked, but Cody let me use this camera to take two other videos I will get later. Emerson was so funny because she knew that the vacuum needed to be plugged in and was very adamet about it! She then wanted to take the cord and put it in the floor, but she did this whole body wiggle that cracked us all up!

We had such a great time and stayed until after 10. I couldn't believe that Emerson stayed awake the entire 40 minute ride home. It did help that she had all 3 boys in the Jeep to entertain her. Kallan, Kason, and Ryan settled in for the night at our house and got up at the crack of down this morning to continue playing.

Should be fun to see what's in store for us today!

Today my dad would have turned 54 and I thought I would share a few of my favorite photos since Ryan was born.

I wish so much for my dad to still be here on earth. I wish that he was here to be a daily part of my life and my children's lives. I wish that he had met Emerson because I know he would have loved her so much. I wish that Ryan had more motorcycle rides with his Papa. I wish that my dad were here to hug me one more time and tell me how much he loved me.

But God has a different plan for me and my dad. God knows that I am strong enough to keep loving my dad and loving Him even after my dad's death. God knows that I have grown closer to Him in a way that I had never known possible that year as I mourned my daughter and my dad. God knows that my dad gave more to me in 29 years than a lot of kids get in an entire lifetime with their parents. God knows that I treasure every day that I had with my dad and truly understand the phrase, "love like there is no tomorrow."

Emerson looked so cute when we were getting ready to leave the house Monday that I couldn't help but stop and take a couple of pictures. What's 5 more minutes late to the office, anyway. I downloaded them tonight and they took my breath away. I can't believe how big Emerson looks. She is starting to lose her baby face and is looking more and more like a toddler.

I feel so blessed to be called mommy. It is the greatest feeling in the world and my greatest accomplishment. Nothing makes me happier than being with my family and loving them with all my heart.

I hope that they put a smile on your face!

18 Month Check-Up

Emerson turned 18 months old on June 26, 2009, but we had to wait until July 9th to see Dr. Maslanka. She loves going to the doctor's office because everyone knows her from the months that we practically lived last fall into this spring. What made it even more fun was that Ryan and Kallan came too. Kallan got to come over the night before and spend the night at our house. Kallan is so much fun and he loves Emerson.

The boys were a big help to me by keeping Emerson entertained while we waited. We enjoyed Annie's honey bunny snacks in the waiting room and Emerson played with all of the toys.

The boys had a good time playing with the Ben 10 creatures that they made that morning. Emerson got undressed and went to the weighed. We quickly returned to the room and waited for the doctor. Emerson spent the time running back and forth through the room. After 2 minutes the door opened and Dr. Maslanka walked in. The first thing that he said to us was that he could mark running of the check list. The picture is a little blurry but she was running really fast.

I was able to tell Dr. Maslanka that Emerson is eating a good variety of foods, starting to use the potty chair, running, jumping, signing, saying more than 10 words, recognizing people, and lots more. I was pleased (overachiever that I am) that I could say yes to all of his questions.

San Antonio Zoo in July--What Were We Thinking?

My mom and I had this great idea to take the kids to the San Antonio Zoo on Monday, July 6th. We had the awesome privilege of keeping Cameron for the day and it seemed like such a good plan--get up early, go to the zoo, come home, rest. Seems simple right? Ha Ha!

San Antonio was blessed with a good amount of rain the night before which left the whole town hot and muggy from about 11 on. Of course, it took us way too long to get out of the house after working around nap times for both of the babies. We got to the zoo about noon and took the kids on the train first. We picked out our seats and waited for the train to leave the depot. There was NO breeze and everyone started to get hot very quickly. Everyone really enjoyed the train ride and the breeze was very welcome. None of us knew that there was a golf course right there in the midst of the zoo and our favorite museum, The Whitte.

We rented a stroller for Emerson since we didn't have Cameron's and headed to the restaurant in the middle of the zoo. Everyone was hot, thirsty, and hungry. Emerson was starting to melt down, but I really thought that lunch and juice would perk her right up. WRONG!

She cried the entire time we were there and refused to eat anything and would only drink Diet Coke with lots of ice. She loves any drink with ice and as hot as she was, I gave in. Cameron kept looking at her like she had lost it. Ryan tried everything he could to help and make her smile. Even the manager came and checked on us. It was embarrassing. Emerson is NORMALLY very mild manned and super sweet, but being that hot did not agree with her.

We didn't want the zoo trip to be a total loss, so we took Ryan up to feed the lorry's. He did this a couple of months before this and just loved it. I guess he takes after his mom who is a total bird lover! I know that all of you are thinking back to my personal zoo days before Ryan.

My mom stayed with the babies and let Emerson run around a little while Cameron took in the sights from the stroller. Emerson enjoyed the freedom and started to return to her normal self. Cameron decided it was her turn to eat and had another bottle before we back up and went home.

I am thankful that there wasn't a picture of us leaving the zoo. All 5 of us were covered in sweat and absolutely exhausted. All in all, I would say that this was definitely a trip to remember.

Here is a video I took of Emerson today. You can tell that she is really missing her favorite brother and grammy this weekend. She brings me every phone that she can find and we have to "call" and talk to them. There is a really cute picture of me with the kids at Dallas World Aquarium on the desktop of the laptop and I think that Emerson thinks Ryan is real in it since that is where we normally Skype. She walks up to the laptop and starts talking to it and points at Ryan on the screen.

We had a great time staying with the Kilpatricks in San Antonio over the 4th of July weekend. We were able to unwind and relax for 5 days while playing with beautiful baby Cameron.

Emerson and Ryan both were so excited to see Aunt K & Uncle Bo and of course Cameron. Cameron has gotten so big and was almost crawling while we were there. She did the most adorable inch worm crawl everywhere.

Both the little girls got dressed in their cute red & white outfits to get ready for the party. Katie & Bo invited a ton of people over for what is hands down the best party. Bo smoked 3 briskets and everyone brought a side item to go along with the AMAZING meat. Bo also rented an air castle for all of the kids along with water balloon volleyball.

Emerson was so excited with Ainslee got to the party. I love watching the two of them and I love hanging out with Cara. The 3 girls played and played and even went out to the air castle with the big kids.

Names in the Sand

I should be sleeping now, but alas sleep will not come. I decided to spend a few minutes catching up on my blog reading and thought I would venture over to Names in the Sand. This woman has the most amazing ministry. She lives in Australia and unfortunately knows the heartache of losing a child. She takes requests from bereaved parents from around the world and writes their name in the sand at sunset. I sent my request in a few weeks ago and have patiently waited. Tears fell from my eyes as I saw my beautiful girls' name in the sand. You can see the link here.

Happy 18 month birthday little girl! I can hardly believe that our little Emerson Renae is 18 months old. What joy she has brought to our lives. Emerson has brought so much love, peace, joy, laughter, and amazement in such a short time on this earth. Emerson has brought healing to my heart in a way that I wondered was even possible.

I love to spend time with her just playing, carrying her, reading to her, laughing with her, snuggling with her, and just being together. Her little personality is shining through more and more every day. Emerson listens very intently to whatever is said to her and I am amazed at what she understands. She is very strong willed (surprise, surprise) and knows EXACTLY what she wants.

She loves her daddy, brother, grammy, grandma and grandpa, dog Duke, and Gizmo the kit (or Gizzy as she calls him), and tolerates Sam the Kitten. She loves to go to the pool and swim. She loves to swing, go down slides, and play Transformers and Hot Wheels with her brother. She loves to play with her baby dolls and have books read to her. She loves to sing her A, B, C's, Itsy Bitsy Spider, and all songs on Kids Place Live on XM radio. She loves to dance and just be silly.

Her sign language skills and verbal skills are improving. She will sign eat, drink, wash hands, ball, please, thank you, Ryan (brother), grammy, help, finished. She will talk your ear off when you pick her up from day care. I know that she is filling me in on all the happenings of the day. I can't wait for the day when I will understand everything she is telling me.

She knows just what toy she wants to play with and will tell you if she can't get it out of the toy box. She is learning to pick up after herself and I am teaching her the Clean Up song. She loves shoes, dresses, and all things pretty. She knows who each pair of shoes in the family belong to and will instruct said person to put them on-NOW, please. She likes to pick out her own clothing from the two choices that I give her. She has even learned to appreciate all of the pretty head bands that I have had made to match her Gymboree outfits.

Mystery Diagnoses: Eczema

Emerson has had a strange rash on her legs for almost a month now. The West Texas heat has not done us any favors and seemed to make it worse. I tried everything that I knew how to get is to go away. I decided this morning that enough was enough, gave in and got an appointment with our pediatrician.

I am not one to go to the pediatrician's office for everything little thing that comes up, but I was at a loss. I still felt silly taking a time slot when there are so many kiddos out there that have major problems going on. Thankfully our pediatrician took a quick look at her legs and knew right away that it was a mild case of eczema. This was not the answer I was hoping for, but it was an answer none the less.

Tonight after an evening at the pool, Emerson had a nice, long bath with oatmeal, followed by her first application of Elocon. I was pleasantly surprised at how much softer her skinned felt afterward. I am looking forward to getting her skin under control and keeping it that way. The Elocon can only be used for a very short time and I will continue to research to find the best course of treatment for her without prescriptions.

Brad had to work this entire Father's Day weekend so we surprised him with a special breakfast when he came home Saturday morning. I made biscuits, sausage gravy, and scrambled eggs. This was my first attempt at milk gravy and Brad gave me two thumbs up. I watched my grandmother carefully when she made it for our mother's day brunch last month. Milk gravy is Brad's favorite breakfast food and I wanted to make something that would be really special since we love him so much and are so thankful for the sacrifices that he makes for us.

I can't believe that 5 years have passed since Brad started college. It was a big decision for our family and we were not exactly sure how we were going to pull it off. Both my parents and Brad's parents helped us out countless times along the way and we are eternally grateful for everything. Brad and I have recounted a conversation many times that my dad had with him when deciding about college. My dad asked Brad, "Do you want to eat hot dogs for 4 years or for the rest of your life?" My dad sure was a smart man! The first two years of school Brad attended class full time and worked nights full time at Home Depot stocking the store. He literally had days that he came home to shower and had 15 minutes to sleep before driving back to town for class.

Brad just hit is 1 year mark with Hendrick and I am so proud of him! He works the night shift to provide extra for his family and makes sacrifices to keep us all taken care of. He is an amazing nurse and I am so proud of him. I love to watch his face light up when he talks about caring for others.

With Amy, Mina, and Miriam moving to Costa Rica in just a couple of days, we had a very early birthday party for Miriam on her last weekend here. Brittney and Chad were very gracious and offered up their home for the day, pool and all. We served exquisite pesto, tomato, and fresh mozzarella sandwiches with shaved ham and chicken and strawberry poppy seed salad. We topped everything with vanilla and chocolate hot pink cupcakes with sprinkles.

Emerson knew right where the action was and promptly went to hang out with her great-grandma on the quilt. Thankfully Zoey loves to share all of her baby toys and Emerson loves to hog them all.

The kids spent almost 5 hours in the pool. Emerson decided that swimming is a lot of fun especially if you daddy is in the water. I tried to get her to sit in one of her floaties, but she wouldn't have anything to do with it. She wanted to be held and not by me. It was nice for me to get to watch her with Brad and Ryan.

It was a great day and one that we will always remember!

We all slept in Saturday morning and made our way over to Grammy's house to see everyone. Cameron went to visit one of her other grandparents, so we were down to 3 kids for the day. There was no set agenda for the day and we spent the morning and early afternoon just talking and watching the kids in action.

Emerson cooked lots of oatmeal in her play kitchen. I have to get pictures of her with her kitchen. She puts the pot under the sink and I turn the faucet. Then she sets everything on the little stove and stirs with a wooden play spoon. I am not sure why I always tell her that she is cooking oatmeal, but she plays along.

But, I digress. Mid-afternoon my mom and the big kids head out to the movies to see Up while Amy, Emerson, and I head out to shop. I can't remember the last time that we were together when there wasn't shopping to be had. We made our way over to the mall and as we were pulling into the parking lot we hear Emerson say, "Dillard's" and point at the store. We both looked at each other and could not believe what she had said! I definitely spend way too much time shopping. We spent about an hour and a half in Dillard's and left with only a webkins for Miriam's birthday party. We ventured around the mall and got new shoes for the girls before heading out.

It wouldn't be a Saturday if we didn't go to Target at least once. I am so thankful that Emerson is a good shopper. We took a break at Target and had a strawberry smoothie and popcorn (her favorites). We topped the evening with a trip to H-E-B for all of the groceries for Miriam's birthday party the next day. We managed to stay out way to late, but had so much fun just being silly sisters.

Grandkids Galore--June 12, 2009

Having Cameron here was a lot of fun and definitely made the house much more lively with two babies. We played and played and had too much fun. Emerson really loves Cameron, but at the same time struggles to understand why she isn't the star. She definitely has the home team advantage with Grammy and Grandma. She gets to see them all the time and they don't get to see Cameron very often.

We are so excited that Cameron is visiting this week. I got to see her first thing this morning when I went to my mom's house to bring Ryan clothes and a toothbrush for today. She was all smiles and totally enamored by Ryan. I am amazed at how good Ryan is with little ones. Emerson pointed at Cameron and smiled and smiled. It was hard to tear myself away and head to the office. We had a bad storm move in this afternoon and Phil let us all leave early. I grabbed Emerson and drove straight home. Of course, I drove right into the storm. We received a tremendous blessing of rain and thankfully no hail. I am so thankful for the rain we have had this last week. The 60+ mile an hour winds have not been so great, but oh well. I took the Jeep to mom's house since she has a carport and I have a gravel driveway. Emerson and I entertained little Cameron for the next hour. She was getting a little cranky and we were a welcome distraction. Cameron scooted ALL over the big room and Emerson thought it was hilarious. We had another fantastic meal at Grandma's house and my Aunt Jill was able to join us. Grandma grilled out chicken, made cole slaw and her wonderful baked beans. We topped it all off with Blue Bell strawberry ice cream.

Emerson worked hard to be on her best behavior, but it was SO hard to share all of her things with Cameron. It was so cute at dinner when Emerson started crying in her high chair. She kept pointing at Cameron. Sweet, innocent Cameron was just swinging away in the swing. Cameron was gracious enough to relinquish the swing and play in the floor. Emerson promptly crawled up in the swing and sat there. She had such a look of relief on her face that you just couldn't help but smile. She sat in the swing for the longest time. About 8:00 it was time for us to pack up and head to the house to get ready for bed. I almost wish we had more storms to that I could leave the office early. I have really enjoyed the extra time with my family today.

Kason's Birthday Party

Saturday, June 6th we were invited to Kason's 5th birthday party. I have no idea how that little boy can be 5. Where has the time gone? I know that his mom would agree with me. Kason is the sweetest little boy I know. He is always super happy and loves seeing Ryan and Emerson. Emerson reminds me a lot of Kason, especially when she climbs on the chair, the kitchen table, or the coffee table. When Kason was little you could blink and he would be sitting on the kitchen table with the biggest smile on his face. I remember once I was watching the boys and I had to get onto him for something. I had to look the other way because I couldn't stop smiling. He was looking back at me with the silliest, most innocent face. The birthday party was at Mendy's brother's amazing home just south of Abilene. I don't think I have been to a more beautiful home (an we only saw the outside).

The boys swam for over 3 hours and Emerson was in the pool most of that time too. The big kids jumped from every surface imaginable. Mendy and I were the only adults brave (crazy) enough to get in the water. The water was FREEZING when we got it, but we quickly adjusted.

Emerson was a trooper especially considering that we left the house at 9:30 that morning for the garage sale at Brittney's house. I love this picture. Her eyes steal my heart every day.

Emerson loved being in the pool with Mendy and her mom Kay. Mendy is my best friend and she & I met back at Mac Direct (along with her husband Cody). Mendy also was so kind to keep Emerson for me so that I could go back to work last spring immediately after they moved back to Abilene from Oklahoma City.

Emerson really wants to be a big kid. She saw the grown ups with bottles of water and had to have one too. It was so nice that she could sign to everyone what she wanted. She took a break from the water and enjoyed watching the kids from a lawn chair.

I would love to say that I had the pleasure of watching Kason open all of his presents, but I have a 17 month old. I took a couple of quick pictures and returned to my side job of chasing Emerson through the backyard.

May 31, 2006 was a day that changed my life. It was a day that changed my story in a way that I never could have imagined. When we went to the hospital that morning my biggest fear was that she would be a boy instead of a little girl. Until that day I had never considered that anything would go wrong. Brad and I were so excited to meet our little girl. I had dreamed of this day since I was a little girl.

Three year ago, I gave birth to a beautiful little girl named Madeline Renae Hubbard. She was born May 31, 2006 at 1:41 pm and weighed 8 pounds 4.2 ounces and was 19 inches long. That morning she was fine. Her vitals and movement were perfect. I was taken off the fetal monitor after the nurse couldn't find her heartbeat and were left alone until they were ready for us in the surgical suite. We had no idea that that moment would change our lives forever. When Madeline was born at 1:41 pm she was not breathing. Everyone in the room went to work right away. I had prepared myself that she probably wouldn't cry right away since Ryan had a tiny bit of trouble when he was born. I held my breath and waited. Brad and I looked at each other in such shock and we couldn't believe what was happening. They worked on her for over 10 minutes, but she was gone.

She was so beautiful. She looked just like Brad with his lips, nose, and ears. She was perfect in every way. She had the most beautiful hair with natural highlights of red, brown, and blonde. She had blue eyes and the softest skin.

Madeline taught us about love. She taught us about family. She taught me to love my children in a way that I never knew before that Wednesday. She taught me to trust God and to love Him more than I ever thought possible. She is the reason I am the woman that I am today. I believe that God is faithful. He is righteous and He is holy. I believe that he has a perfect plan for my family's lives and I trust Him alone. I can hold my hands to Heaven and praise him for giving me Madeline for just a brief time on this earth. I can praise Him for May 31, 2006.

Happy Birthday baby girl! We love you so much and miss you every day. We can't wait for the day that we hold you in heaven and are reunited for eternity.

May 30, 2009 Pool Time

Mom and I took the kids to the Abilene Swim Club this evening. It was Emerson's first time in the pool since late last summer. The water was a little bit cold, but she didn't cry when we got in. She "swam" around in her lady bug floaty while Ryan dazzled us with his swimming talents.

We took a dinner break for yummy roast beef sandwiches with pepper jack cheese and southwestern mustard. After we ate, Ryan went back in the water and mom and I took turns pushing Emerson on the swing set. She loved the swing and I made a mental note to get one soon for the house.

Emerson and I attended the Ortiz Elementary 3rd-5th awards ceremony on May 28, 2009. Mom had to sick towards the back of the auditorium and I was so thankful for my "big lens" on my camera. The photos of Ryan didn't turn out as nice as I would have liked, but oh well. Ryan received a certificate, ribbon, and lapel pin for straight A's this year. I am so proud of him! He is so smart and loves school

Memorial Day at Aunt K's House

We were invited to invade Aunt K and Uncle Bo's house for Memorial Day weekend. We drove up Saturday morning an spend the majority of the day at the outlets in San Marcos. Miriam could hardly wait for us to get there and I think she called about 15 times before we got to San Antonio. She is so adorable and wanted a play by play of Emerson's activities in the car. I was happy to oblige. Miriam is a joy to be around and she is hysterical!

Sunday morning we went to Community Bible Church in San Antonio and all the kids had a good time. Emerson settled right into her class and was playing up a storm when I picked her up. We had a wonderful lunch on the patio at La Hacienda de Los Barrios. This is Ryan's favorite San Antonio restaurant because they have awesome tortilla soup and an outdoor playground. I even took Emerson over for a few minutes to play.

That afternoon Katie and I took Cameron, Emerson, and Ryan back to their house. We put the babies down for naps and got ready for the party that evening.

Katie and Bo had invited over a few friends from church/work. Ryan was the official greeter at the party and opened the gate for every car that came in.

Bo grilled up beef and bison hamburgers for everyone and mom cooked corn on the cob. The food was terrific as always.

We had a great time visiting with everyone, but one little girl stole the show. Ainslee (who is two weeks older than Emerson) was there with her parents of course. It took the two girls a little while to get the hang of each other, but after dinner they were an unstoppable force. They played and played and played the entire evening. The big kids had a lot of fun too and were all happy to join in with the little ones.

I finally put Emerson in her pajamas and she was still on a roll. You can just see in her face how much fun she was having.

May 20, 2009 Family Dinner

We have been so blessed by Grandma and Grandpa's Wednesday Night Family Dinner! They started feeding everyone in the family on Wednesday night at 6:30 at their house. The food has been spectacular each time and the company is even better. Brad works every other Wednesday, but tonight he got to go with us. I got home from the office and put a cute dress on Emerson. I know you all are shocked, but I just love her dresses and tonight we added a hat. Emerson loves to ride in daddy's big truck and tonight she got to sit on the console since we only have to drive around Quail Country to get to Grandma's house.

We had a great time visiting while the kids played. Grandma made a great dinner for everyone and topped off the evening with her famous fruit salad.

May 19, 2009, ALPS Presentation

On Tuesday, May 19, 2009, I took Emerson to see Ryan's ALPS presentation. He attended ALPS once a week every week during this past school year. This is Ryan's second year in the program and I think this year was his favorite. Mrs. Cope, his teacher, concentrated a large portion of their time on Egypt which Ryan loved. He was proud to show off his collection from the year.

I was totally blow away by Ryan's string art. He wants to be an Abilene High Eagle when he is in high school and the bald eagle is his favorite critter.

The kids were supposed to stay by their presentation and answer questions from other parents and students, but Ryan was more interested in seeing his friends. This year he was able to spend every Tuesday with Anthony Leet & Brett Ferguson.

Yogurt Baby

There is a little girl in San Antonio named Ainslee who is only a couple weeks older than Emerson. Her mom Cara is very brave and lets her eat all on her own. I resist Emerson feeding herself messy foods most of the time, but tonight I gave into the yogurt. It doesn't bother me at all if she is eating non-messy foods, but I really don't like all of the mess of some foods. But I was determined that I could do it.

Emerson loved feeding herself the yogurt. She liked it so much that she almost the entire container and I was able to eat my dinner all by myself. Lately Emerson will eat a little of what is on her plate--chicken, cheese, baby cheetos, black beans, etc, then she wants out of her high chair and in my lap.

Once she finished eating we walked straight to the tub for her bath. It was a very enjoyable dinner and we will definitely do it again. Thanks Cara!

King Tut

On Thursday, May 14, 2009, Ryan and I made the drive over to Dallas to see the King Tut exhibit at the Dallas Museum of Art.

I remember mom and dad taking the 3 of us girls to see the Ramsey's exhibit in Fort Worth when I was young and how much I enjoyed it.

Ryan and I dropped Emerson off at Pioneer Drive that morning and drove to the Metroplex. We stopped in Fort Worth to have an early lunch. Ryan really wanted a hamburger so we stopped at Pappa's Burgers.

We found the museum without any trouble thanks for our handy, dandy GPS. How did I ever survive with out and my i-phone? I will never know.

We were there in plenty of time so we started out by watching the 3-D Egypt movie. It was a great way to start the afternoon and to get us in the mood for all things Egypt.

We had to wait in line for almost 40 minutes to get into the exhibit. Ryan was not happy about the wait, and I tried to explain to him that long lines were part of life.

The items in the exhibit were exquisite. Most were not from King Tut, but I try not to dwell on that part. I loved all of the jewelry and gold boxes from the tombs. There was one box that was from King Tut's tomb that was about the size of a small foot stool. It was adorned in gold and depicted King Tut and his wife in friendly, playful poses all over it. You could tell how much they were in love just from this one box.

Ryan picked out a fun t-shirt, fridge magnet, and really cool King Tut box from the gift shop. We left the museum exhausted but full of lots of new knowledge about Egypt.

Mother's Day 2009

Happy Mother's Day to all of the special women in my life. To my mom for her infinite wisdom, guidance, and unconditional love. To my grandma for putting so much spark into everything that she does and showing us all how to live life to the fullest.

Today we celebrated all the moms in our family with a special brunch at my grandparent's house. The food was wonderful and we all ate way too much bacon. We had 3 different kinds of waffles and grandma made biscuits and milk gravy. I even got to help with the gravy and think I might be able to make it on my own. I know that Brad will love this since milk gravy is his favorite food next to a giant ribeye.

Everyone that knows me, knows that I love being a mom. I truly feel that God gave me a calling to be called mom. I am not a perfect mom--far from it, but I love my children with all my heart and I strive to show them God's love everyday.

I am a different kind of mom. I am a mom who has buried a child. I am thankful that not many moms bear that title. It is not a "cool" club to belong to. I hold my children extra tight and give into 5 more hugs before bed because we are not guaranteed anything on this earth. I hold my baby more than I should and think about my precious babies every second of the day. I still wake up several times a night to make sure that Emerson is OK even though she sleeps 2.5 feet from my bed.

I remember what it felt like 9 years ago when I became a mom. I was so happy to finally be a part of one of my favorite celebrations. My mom is an amazing woman and has always been an inspiration to me. When we were small she stayed home with us then she finished her bachelor's degree in 3 1/2 years. How she did this with 3 small children I will never know. My mom is an amazing teacher, phenomenal Grammy, fantastic mom, and my best friend. She is a woman to look up to. I remember thinking that day that I had big shoes to fill if I wanted to hold a candle to my mom.

Soccer with Miriam

Ryan was so excited that Miriam and Aunt Amy joined his usual cheering section of his mom & dad, little sister, Grammy, and Grandma & Grandpa. It was a lot of fun having them with us. There is definitely a learning curve between soccer with Uncle Mina and Upward Soccer. Miriam was very vocal about the action on the field. She was calling all kinds of things out to Ryan for him to do. We had to tell her that he would have no idea what she was talking about. Ryan scored a goal and was thrilled.

The game ended in a tie but we didn't care. We were just happy to all be together. We went out for an early lunch at Arby's, our usual after game restaurant.

The Big Science Birthday Party!

On May 9, 2009, we had Ryan's birthday party at my mom's house. We had the best time and Ryan rates this the best birthday party ever! He really wanted a science party (or skating party) and I spent the last few months trying to come up with really great ideas that wouldn't do me in. I tend to go a little overboard on Ryan's parties (I know, you are surprised) but I was determined not to do "too much."

Friday night my mom, Amy, and I pre-assembled beaker name badges to have the kids wear when they first go to the party. We also made a great jell-o mold with red jell-o and giant bugs in it. It turned out so cool.

When the kids arrived we had them write their name on the name badge. Then we gave them their own scientist bag with safety glasses, a bug collector case, and bug tongs. We sent everyone out on a bug hunt while we waited on everyone to arrive. I was amazed at the bugs they brought back. I also learned that Becka Schmidt is such a good bug catcher!

Next, we made green slime from corn starch and green water. The kids really enjoyed measuring things and mixing together the ingredients. We had a few zip loc bags tear, but all in all we kept the mess under control. It also helped that everyone wore their own lab coat.

All of the kids were STARVING by 5:30 so we took a break for chili dogs and chips. The kids ate their food in 3 seconds flat and were ready for more action. I had to beg to get to eat one chili dog! The kids loved the bright green and blue cupcakes and Ryan loved all of the gifts! He was extremely blessed.

I have learned the way to a kid's heart--BINGO. Who knew? We played Christmas bingo at Emerson's 1st birthday and tonight we played Nature Bingo. The big kids were so kid to help the little ones out. We offered a choice of two prizes for the winner of each round--bubbles or an extra Diet Coke to shoot off with Mentos. It was nice to take a little break and sit down for a couple of minutes before MENTOS TIME!

The big event of the party was Diet (H-E-B) coke and Mento's. It started out nice and calm, but once the first bottle shot out the kids were wired! They were all screaming and carrying on. We let each kiddo take a turn with their 16.9 ounce bottles and 4 mentos. Once all of the kids had a turn we decided to get creative. I thought it would be fun to shoot two off at a time. I love good intentions; they always get me in trouble. I handed Kyle Kahl one bottle and Kallan Christopher another. I don't know what happened to Kyle's bottle but the pin came out and it shot straight up. Kallan got caught up in the moment and pulled the other pin out and shot his bottle straight at my Jeep. The weather was so nice that I had all 4 windows down. It never occured to me that I might want to consider moving it before we started with the mentos. It is amazing that the Mentos managed to shoot diet coke through the entire vehicle and out the other side. Now that's force! Not 2 minutes later Kason Christopher was asking me what to do with his that he had just shot off when I managed to fumble a ready to go launcher off the hood of the Jeep directly on to Cody Christopher and myself. I laughed until I cried. I told Cody that I would have been better off telling Kason to pour his bottle out on my feet.

We ended the night by trying out the wind tube. Mom had gotten it at a workshop and hadn't gotten to try it out on a bunch of kids herself. She asked all of the kids who was full of the most hot air. Of course, they all immediately chimed, "Ryan" in unison. I wasn't surprised and had warned mom the night before. Ryan had to try to blow up the tube using the fewest puffs. He puffed about 10 times and realized that it wasn't filling up. We had the kids take turns doing the same thing. They all thought it was hilarious. Then it's my mom's turn to show them how it's done. She opens up the opening of the tube really wide and blows about 3 times and fills the entire tube up. The kids were amazed!

I can't write an entire post without talking about Emerson. I am so proud of my little 16 month girl. She took two naps today and was so well behaved. She spent the evening playing with her daddy, Brittney, Chad, Chris Ferguson, and anyone that would have her. I can't thank everyone enough for entertaining her so that I could focus on the other 13 kids at the party.

We actually finished the party 30 minutes ahead of schedule and everyone was ready to go home. I think that everyone was beyond exhausted--I know that I was. Amy was so awesome and had cleaned everything up while the party was going on so I was able to get out of their before 8:00. Ryan was croaking off to go to Target to spend his gift cards so we headed to town. Emerson fell asleep before we left Quail Country and didn't wake up until we were back home almost an hour and a half. Ryan still had a lot of energy, but I told him we had to go home before I fell asleep walking through Target.

Happy Birthday Ryan Bradley! I can't believe that today Ryan turned 9 years old. Where have the last 9 years gone? It truly feels like yesterday that I was holding this tiny little boy who was black & blue from his wild entry into this world. Ryan was born at 9:59 pm on May 7, 2000, at Abilene Regional Medical Center. He weighed 8 pound 11.7 ounces and was 20 1/2 inches long. He had so much dark brown hair and two black eyes and a huge bruise on his forehead. Thankfully all of these went away within the first month, except for the spot on his forehead that still shows up when he gets really mad. Here is a picture of my dad and Ryan. This is the day that Ryan stole his heart. From this day forward, Ryan became the center of the universe (until Miriam arrived and they had to share, of course!)

Here is Ryan today--lean, tall, dark hair, super smart, and stubborn as his mama. I am very proud of him and can't believe what a big kid he has become. Ryan woke up at 6:30 so that he could open his presents from his daddy and me. He received two lego Star Wars sets, and a 8 new t-shirts for this summer. Five of them were "DJ" shirts so he was beyond excited. For those of you who aren't familiar with "DJ" shirts, they are really trendy t-shirts with rock star graphics. He picked out the red one to wear to school today since red is his favorite color. He had a great day at school and we took him to Mr. Gatti's for his birthday dinner. It was great that Brad was off and we all went as a family.

This week has been completely crazy. I feel like I am so far behind that I don't stand a chance of ever getting caught up.

Grandma & Grandpa had us all over for dinner again at their house. It was really nice that Brad was off tonight because he got to come. Mom made us really yummy chicken fajitas and we had such a good time visiting. I can't remember the last big family event that Brad got to attend in its entirety.

Not Me Monday!

I have been following Mckmama for quite a few months now. I laugh my tail end off at all of the Not Me posts and thought I would give it a try.

I did not turn 32 this last week. I did not eat multiple deserts every day because I am strictly following a diet and I did not celebrate my birthday for 5+ days now.

I did not let Emerson go 5 days without a bath since we did not stay out late almost every night.

I did not let Sam the Kitten purr in my ear for an hour while I was trying to go so sleep because I was too tired to get up and throw him out.

I did not sing my A,B,Cs over and over especially when Emerson was not around.

I did not miss Ryan's soccer game because it was raining and cold on Saturday morning.

I did not arrive at work at 9:00 every day last week because I am always on time.

I did NOT give in and buy Ryan another ridiculous toy at Kohl's last night.

I did not try out Diet Coke & Mentos tonight in anticipation of Ryan's birthday party.

I did not seriously contemplate putting duct tape (sure it comes in pink) on Emerson's diapers.

I did not do the happy dance in the bathroom tonight because Emerson went on the potty before her bath. Sorry Brittney, there is no video of that one. :)

Emerson did not eat her first handful of dirt tonight at mom's house. I totally did not think to myself, "Well, it's about time."

I am definitely not attending a wedding tomorrow (Tuesday) at 5 pm. Did I mention that it was NOT on a Tuesday at 5 pm.

I am not sad that Ryan is turning 9 years old on Thursday.

Say it with a Video

This week went by way to fast and the weekend went by even faster. Thursday night Kerry, my freight vendor, and her son Casey took us out to Prime Time. I did manage a couple of pictures and a video. We had 2 hours at Prime Time and we managed to run the entire time. To top off the evening we played 16 holes of miniature golf if right at 18 minutes with 4 people. We were all falling over with laughter and had a great time. We played laser tag (moms against sons) and Kerry and I stomped the boys.

Saturday we woke up to really cold weather, a tiny bit of rain and no power. We packed up the Jeep and headed to Ryan's soccer game to freeze. It was so cold and wet that I turned around and put Emerson back in the car. Brad was a real trooper and stayed out on the field with Ryan. Even my grandparents came to cheer him on. Sorry there are no pictures or video of the game.

Sunday afternoon we had a family dinner at Abuelo's. This is my favorite restaurant and when I was pregnant with both Ryan and Emerson I craved their chips and queso daily. Needless to say both kids love queso. I got a very silly video of both kids. I titled this video, Queso Happy Dance. Emerson was getting really tired by this point of our meal and it was starting to show. Wish I had taken the camcorder out about 10 minutes before.

Sunday evening we made a quick trip to Kohl's to buy a birthday present for my friend Carly. Ryan loves to check out the toy section and see if he can find a good deal on a toy. He has figured out that they had a good clearance section and he usually can talk me into buying something for him. We found the cutest watering pail for Emerson to help with. We bought one for our house and one for my mom's house. Emerson has been helping in our little garden to water and check all of the plants.

Birthday to Remember

Today I turned 32, not 25 as I tried to pass for. Ryan promptly told everyone that I was indeed 32 not 25. Thanks Ryan!

I have really enjoyed my birthday this year. Aunt Jill took me out for lunch at the Bee Hive and we had today's special, loaded baked potato soup, a prime rib sandwich with au jus dip, and these tiny shredded potatoes. It was wonderful and I always enjoy hanging out with Jill. We had Italian cream cake at the office this afternoon and I was surprised how many people actually liked the cake. One of our print vendors sent us an Italian Cream Cake about 10 or 11 years ago and I was instantly hooked.

My grandparents had us over for dinner (fantastic meatloaf, potatoes, peas, and strawberry shortcake). My mom, Aunt Jill, Tyler, Jesse, and Zoey all came to join in the celebration and start a new family event. Tyler wants us to get together more often so we are going to start sharing a meal together as a family (or as many of us as can get there) every couple of weeks. I think it is a great idea and I am really looking forward to the next dinner. Ryan had a good time entertaining both the babies. Zoey would smile at him and squeal with delight. I sat with both the little ones at a wagon full of Mega Blocks. I was really surprised when Emerson handed the legos to Zoey and even gave her the prized Mega Blocks boy who says "Mega Blocks" when you push his tummy. What a sacrafice.

My Aunt Cindy just got a new Flip Video camcorder for her upcoming trip and just knew that I would love one too. So, my grandparents, Aunt Cindy, and Aunt Jill got one for my birthday. It is the coolest little camcorder and I love it! It is very compact, shoots 60 minutes of video, and has software that I can actually use. I shot a couple little videos tonight and can't wait to shoot more. My mom got me a really great gift card to Kohl's which I cannot wait to go and use!

I am really looking forward to this weekend. Brad is off and I have asked mom to watch the kids so that Brad and I can go see a movie. I am a huge Nicholas Cage fan and he has a new movie out (well, new to me anyway) that I really want to see. It will be so nice to spend a couple of hours alone with my hubby.

I put Emerson to bed tonight and got a few minutes to check out my favorite blogs. On Kelly's Korner she linked a video from Hootie aka Darius Rucker. It was so moving and hits home just show short a time our kids are little. I look back at pictures of Ryan from just a couple of years ago when my dad was alive and I can't believe how small he was. Emerson is only 15 months old and it feels like she was born yesterday but now she is running and putting together little sentences. I know that I will blink and she will be heading off to kindergarten. I want to treasure every day with my kids and relish each stage that they are in. I love that nothing in the world makes Emerson happy like her mommy. I love when she runs up to me with her arms straight up and can't wait for me to hold her tight. I love nursing her to sleep every night and singing You are my Sunshine over & over. I love how she climbs in my lap so I can read her book after book after book. I love to dress her in pretty little dresses with frilly socks and matching headbands. I feel so privileged to be a mom.

Praying for Stellan

Today Stellan will be having surgery to try and map the pathways to his heart so that they can keep him out of SVT. We have been following MckMama for quite some time now and have fallen deeply in love with Stellan. They have asked people to wear orange today to support Stellan and to send in their pictures for the website. Here is the picture that we sent. Ryan's signature color was always been orange so it wasn't a problem to find an orange shirt in his closet.

Today was the last performance of the 2009 Children's Performing Arts Series at the Paramount. I took Ryan to see Dr. Dolittle. This play had an interesting twist and the story was also told using sign language. It was great to see sign language in action as I have been using it with Emerson for about 7 months. Of course, our communication is very limited and not at all like we saw today. Ryan really liked seeing signs that he knew and the performers were great.

My mom was gracious to watch Emerson this afternoon while Ryan and I hung out at the Paramount. Mom told her that she had to wear her hat if she wanted to go outside and lo and behold she had a hat on when I got there. Mom helped me plant 8 pots with various herbs and vegetables. Our ground is so terrible that I can't imagine how much work it would take to have a real garden. My idea is to grow the vegetables in pots so they can have actual soil. Emerson came and helped us too while Ryan looked for sticks to put across the pots to keep the cats out. Oh the joys of country living! I wish that I had my camera with me to show just how dirty Emerson was by the time we came home. We put the pots out in the yard and we will cross our fingers that we will have actual food late next month. For starters we are growing zucchini, squash, egg plant, cucumbers, red bell peppers, banana peppers, flat leaf parsley, & cilantro.

On a side note, Brad brought home a tiny kitten early last night. She is orange with little while feet. She slept with us last night and was quite well behaved. Ryan got up at 6:30 this morning and played with her for two solid hours. Emerson is absolutely in love and wants to carry the kitty everywhere. We keep reminding her only pat pat (not grab by the neck). I will try and get a picture tomorrow (of the kitten) so you can fall in love too.
